Extra info:

Whilst on Safari all our guides are briefed and obey the rules of the National Park that are there to serve and protect the interest of the wildlife. All drivers keep a 20 meters distance from Game and never drive off the designated routes to ensure that the animals have their privacy.

The local community relies on trade generated by travellers to Mombasa, our excursions to open air markets and craft shops helps to keep the local economy buoyant and securing their way of life and lively hood. All our guides are locally employed not only to give you the best experience and local knowledge but to keep employment within the country of origin.

We are mindful of coastal culture and remind all visitors to never take pictures of the local people or their home without asking their permission and to always dress with decorum.

Our excursions help to support traditional coastal livelihoods we tell our travellers not give money to children on the beach, as this can encourage them to stay away from school.

For every booking made through African Eden a donation goes towards The Born Free Foundations community based project aimed towards solving this ongoing conflict between wild life and residential areas that boarder Kenya’s national parks.  If requested we are happy to send you updates informing you of how we have helped to fund a community based project.

All our guides share our goal to limit the damage caused by travellers by increasing their awareness such as not to damage or remove coral, shells, starfish or any other sea – flora or fauna. Removal is illegal, seriously disrupts the eco-system and some marine life is dangerous. The areas outside the parks and reserves are threatened by excessive shell collection. Empty shells provide homes for hermit crabs and some fish.  We remind our guests to never dispose of litter on the beach or in the sea. It is illegal and environmentally unfriendly. Marine turtles can confuse clear plastic waste with jelly fish and will die if they eat it. Hand – feeding of fish is discouraged. It disrupts normal feeding patterns. Environmentally friendly activities such as snorkelling and diving are encouraged, under the supervision of our excursion providers, who work closely with us to ensure strict adherence to this code of practice.

African Eden uses Climate Care’s calculator to work out how many tonnes of CO2 our safari activities produce and we pay Climate Care to reduce the equivalent amount of CO2 in another part of the world by investing that money into emission reduction projects. So when a client buys our safari holiday we buy a tonne of carbon from Climate Care’s emission reduction portfolio and in turn a tonne will be reduced through their projects. The money is used to replace fuel-hungry inefficient technologies with low carbon efficient technologies in developing countries. It helps spread the adoption of low carbon technologies (many of which are award-winning) and improves the quality of life for communities and individuals alike.

You will receive a Climate Care certificate showing their emission reduction, as well as reduction tips to help you to continue reducing where possible at home.

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and elephant orphange is a small, flexible charity, established in 1977 to honour to memory of a famous Naturalist, David Leslie William Sheldrick.  The Trust had successfully saved and hand-reared over 82 infant African Elephant calves, two from the day of birth. Currently, over 40 of the Trust’s hand-reared elephants are fully established and living free amongst their wild peers in Tsavo, some returning with wild born young to show their erstwhile human family.

The Trust has trained a team of competent Elephant Keeper who replace the orphans’ lost elephant family until such time as the transition to the wild herds has been accomplished, something that can take up to l0 years, since elephant calves duplicate their human counterparts in terms of development through age progression. Those that were orphaned too young to recall their elephant family remain dependent longer, but all the Trust’s orphans eventually take their rightful place amongst their wild counterparts, including those orphaned on the day they were born.

The Trust also pioneered the successful hand-rearing and complicated strategy of successful rehabilitation back into established wild rhino communities of orphaned Black Rhino calves. Its expertise has been responsible for saving many orphaned rhino calves on Kenya’s Private Ranches as well as elsewhere in Africa. Its hands-on practical experience and inside knowledge of this species is unmatched. You have the opportunity to adopt an orphan rhino or elephant when you visit the park which goes towards their carer’s, food and upkeep.
