We strongly believe in corporate social responsibility and conserving our environment through eco-tourism. You can off-set your carbon footprint by clicking on the climate care link (that can be found in the insurance and extra's page). A small donation from every booking made through African Eden goes towards a Born Free community based project. You have the option to choose a holiday that has less of a negative impact on eco-systems and positively contributes to the destination on a social and environmental level. A few examples of projects are below:

Global Friends in Kenya

There are five Global Friends communities in Kenya, centered around five schools. Marungu Primary School is located in the Taita Taveta District of Kenya, one of the poorest regions of the country. The region in which the school is located also forms a critically important wildlife corridor between Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks. The wildlife in this corridor is currently under enormous pressure. Threats such as poaching of wild animals for bushmeat and deforestation of habitats for illegal charcoal burning are putting the entire ecosystem at risk. In early 2009, Born Free conducted a de-snaring operation in the Taita area, which revealed a disturbing number of snares that had been set to trap wild animals. It is clear that the challenges to both the wildlife and the communities in this part of Kenya are very high. This is why Born Free decided to approve Marungu Primary School as a new Global Friends school in January 2009. The school is large, and provides a focal point for the local community. Community leaders from Marungu have already expressed their interest in dramatically reducing the level of wildlife poaching in the area and have requested Born Free's support in tackling this problem.

Global Friends in Tanzania

The Mafia archipelago is approximately 120km south of Dar es Salaam. Mafia is a top marine biodiversity hotspot, with 5 species of sea turtle and a remnant population of the highly endangered dugong. Born Free supports the Tanzanian organisation called Sea Sense, in their important work to conserve this magnificent natural environment. Aside from the numerous conservation challenges in the area, there are also challenges for the communities that live on Mafia - it is the poorest district in Tanzania. Juani Primary School on Mafia island is a member of the Global Friends family. Through annual donations, funds have been used to support work at the school including repairs to classroom floors, walls and roofing and the toilet block. Pupils and teachers at Juani have been actively involved in conservation activities, planting trees, protecting turtles and their nests and performing in competitions to raise public environmental awareness.

West Kilimanjaro Project

Since 2000, Born Free has supported the West Kilimanjaro Project in Tanzania, in which local Maasai villagers carry out frequent informal patrols of the 600 sq kms that encompass their three communities. Their purpose is to monitor all wildlife and human activities in the area and record the details using a symbol based record-keeping system specifically designed for people with limited literacy and numeracy skills. The project has seen incredible success, with wildlife species on the increase, and elephants and giraffes in particular now reaching very high numbers. The project has also enabled a far better understanding of the presence and seasonal abundance of key species in the area such as elephant, lion and cheetah.

Climate Care

African Eden uses Climate Care's calculator to work out how many tonnes of CO2 your safari activities produce and we pay Climate Care to reduce the equivalent amount of CO2 in another part of the world by investing that money into emission reduction projects. So when you buy our safari holiday we buy a tonne of carbon from Climate Care's emission reduction portfolio and in turn a tonne will be reduced through their projects. The money is used to replace fuel-hungry inefficient technologies with low carbon efficient technologies in developing countries. It's a fantastic investment because not only does it reduce emissions, it helps spread the adoption of low carbon technologies (many of which are award-winning) and improves the quality of life for communities and individuals alike. You'll get a Climate Care certificate showing your emission reductions, as well as reduction tips to help you continue reducing where possible.
